Relentless Snowboard Challenge Judges

TBA

Cuts

Each competitor will get 1 inspection run and 2 judged runs on days of competition. During qualifiers the judges will look at how many athletes there are and make a cut based on numbers and skill level. Results will be announced at the meeting at Turoa Lodge, Ohakune after the qualifying day.

After the ski semis, the field will be cut down to 10 competitors. The finals will be a 3 run format (weather dependent).

The Relentless Snowboard Challenge is a one day event; results will be based on a two run format.

The judges and event captain will monitor weather conditions and timelines, the format may change on the day to one run, based on these.

Competitors must finish their run with board and skis on. Skiers must finish with BOTH skis on. If skis come off, skiers may run up and put them back on.

Judging Categories

For the Export Gold Xtreme & Relentless Snowboard Challenge we will follow the standard IFSA judging criteria. The information below is taken from the IFSA “Judging Guidelines” book.

Competitors will be marked on the following categories on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest score possible:

• Line - Degree of Difficulty (Line Difficulty)
• Control
• Fluidity
• Form & Technique
• Aggressiveness

Each category holds equal weight. However, the categories can have an effect on each other. eg: falling has a significant effect on Categories 2, 3, 5 and possibly 4.

Air is NOT a category, but it may help your score in the Form/Technique category.

Specifics of Categories

Line

Each skier/boarder chooses his/her line down the venue. Competitors are given high scores for choosing a difficult line. Difficulty is determined by steepness, exposure, snow conditions and obstacles or hazards. Not how the athlete skis it! This category is scored first and must be discussed by all judges.

Note: This is the most significant category! All other categories' maximum score is directly related to line score. For example, a competitor cannot score a 9 for Control after skiing a 3 line. The line score is discussed among the judges and certain areas of the venue are predetermined before the competition starts each day.

The line score is determined by the difficulty of the terrain. The other categories describe the “execution of the line”. For example: “He definitely skied the same line as the last 5 competitors but he went faster, aired twice as far, and did cooler tricks. Should his line score be higher?” NO! Line score is Line score. The other scoring categories will take care of how he executed that line.

Control

Athletes MUST BE IN CONTROL. ANY loss of control will result in a lower score. A fall is the ULTIMATE LOSS of control. However, a skilful recovery will reduce a penalty. If a competitor falls in a predetermined NO FALL ZONE (dangerous area to lose control) the “2 point rule” must be instituted. (The finish area may be considered a no fall zone.) See Judging Criteria in the handbook for an explanation of the 2 point rule.

Fluidity

Constant direction toward a goal (areas of the course, the finish etc.) This category includes CONTINUITY, PACE, and SMOOTH transitions. Stopping, unnecessary traverses and most falls will result in a lower score. Fluidity is often relative to the line score: A 10 for fluidity on the 10 line, in general, will be slower than a 10 for fluidity on the 8 line.

Form & Technique

Competitor is judged on STYLE and technical ability. There are no standards. This is a category where the athlete impresses the judges with their style and skiing/riding beauty. Stay unbiased.

Aggressiveness (attack)

ENERGY with which the competitor attacks his or her chosen line. Are they timid about the line? Or really focused and confident; skiing fast and strong?
